Preparing for Orals and WKND Homework

Hello Seniors,
I'm sorry I could not be in class today; I pulled a muscle in my back somehow and can't move!!

Ok. So here's the deal:

1. You should have gotten a bit of background information on Dr. King/Civil Rights Movement today in the video. Hopefully this will help you contextualize his speeches a bit.

2. In terms of King: think about the purpose of giving speeches: to inspire and motivate. What rhetorical devices does King use to do this and do you believe he is effective?

3. In terms of studying for orals:
Remember to contextualize every piece first--who is the author? How does the piece situate itself amongst his/her other poems/speeches/plays/stories? Is the piece reflective of the writers time/place (17th century? Civil Rights Mvt., Ireland, etc)? Then, like the SSSIFT method asks of you, be sure to describe the "Situation" of the poem/passage--literally, what is going on? Don't jump to analysis before taking care of that first.
And finally, always remember to use the text to support what you are saying.

4. Your weekend homework (in case the sub didn't do a good job telling you):
*Comment on a peers' plog
*Complete the Rhetorical Structure Wkst on "I Have a Dream"
*Read/Annotate the other King speeches
*Be prepared to discuss all three speeches on Monday

Hey kiddies (er, I mean "candidates"--that's what the IBO is telling us to call you, not "kids"),

Do know that I have internet access here and, despite being in LA, time to check your blogs.

So, keep up with them over the weekend. There were so many motifs we did not discuss aloud, so many comparisons you could make btwn the two plays...if you're feeling stuck, go read some on-line criticisms and compare yours with others (like you did for Lorca).
